Proposed Bylaws Change 1

Title: Amendments for Inclusivity and Expanded Participation in International ACAC

Proposal Overview: This proposal seeks to amend Article 1 of the International ACAC bylaws for the following purposes:

  1. Introduce inclusive language and descriptors that accurately represent International ACAC’s growing global membership.
  2. Introduce inclusive language that broadens the definition of international students.
  3. Remove the non-voting category to extend voting privileges and executive board participation to all members.

Background: In accordance with the current bylaws, the privilege to vote in annual elections and serve on the Executive Board were reserved to only not-for-profit universities, colleges, secondary schools, organizations, and individuals. Members affiliated with for-profit organizations, including those who transitioned from eligible voting positions, were excluded. Additionally, there is language in the existing bylaws that suggest that what’s defined as international, is outside the United States.

Rationale: Collaborating with the Committee of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as the Governance and Nominating Committee, this proposal aims to:

  1. Ensure that all members have the right to vote and serve on the Executive Board.
  2. Allow all Executive Board members who undergo employment changes to continue their term.
  3. Make the bylaws inclusive to all members globally who support students in the international post secondary admissions process. For example, revising terms such as “colleges and universities” to “post secondary institutions”, eliminating the requirement of “not-for-profit” affiliation, and substituting the terms “United States and its territories” for language that provides an inclusive definition of what it means to be international.

Notes: For Bylaw changes to occur, a vote must be presented to all eligible voting members of International ACAC. The proposal has been authored by Kristoffer Toribio, immediate Past President and Chair of the Governance & Nominating Committee, and in collaboration with Isthier Chaudhury, Vice President of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee.

Proposed Bylaws Change 2

Title: Amendment Proposal: Eliminating NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) Membership Requirement for Executive Board Service

Proposal Overview: This proposal aims to amend Article 03 of the International ACAC bylaws to remove the prerequisite of NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) membership for Executive Board Service. This excludes the Presidential Team, who must remain active members of NACAC for International ACAC to remain compliant with its affiliate agreement.

Background: Initially, NACAC membership was mandatory for all Executive Board members due to the requirement of attending the annual NACAC conference.

Rationale:

  • The Executive Board has voted to waive the responsibility for Executive Board Members to attend the annual NACAC Conference, with the exception of the International ACAC Presidential Team.
  • Removing this prerequisite will alleviate the financial burden on board members, as they will no longer need to purchase NACAC memberships. This alteration may also encourage more members to consider serving on the Executive Board.

Notes: To enact Bylaw changes, a vote must be conducted among all eligible voting members of International ACAC. This proposal has been authored by Wilson Lee, President-Elect, and seconded by Daniel Marschner, Vice President for Advocacy and Outreach.
